Expanding chucks for winding and unwinding reels

Developed for shaftless systems, our expanding chucks guarantee the correct winding and unwinding of reels of any material.

Expanding elements’ characteristics

Expanding elements can be of different dimensions and weights, according to the type of machine, and can have a diameter that goes from 50 mm to 1000 mm.

They can be of different types:

-With lugs

-With ledges

-With leaves

Lugs and ledges can be made of metal or hard rubber, whilst leaves are generally made of steel, and are externally coated with rubber in case the cores are made of steel too.


The mechanism that allows elements to lift and block the core of the reel to allow its rotation can be activated different ways:

Pneumatic core chucks: inside the expanding chuck there is an inner tube or a rubber tire which is inflated up to 6 bar pressure for letting the elements expand.

Mechanical core chucks: the rotation activates the inclined plans that make the elements lift, and it is triggered by a key. Some mechanical core chucks can be self-expanding, therefore the elements automatically self-expand as an effect of the rotation.

Pneumechanical core chucks: the expanding chuck is equipped with a pneumatic piston connected to inclined plans, which by self-expanding activates them and triggers the movement.

Special types

There are two types of expanding chucks which distinguish themselves from the others for their peculiarities and fields of application:

-Reel-lifting model

-Model with leaves

The reel-lifting model, positioned vertically, is assembled on handling systems, and is used for the safe transportation and handling of reels.

This particular type has a mechanical expansion and a pneumatic retraction.

The model with leaves is mainly used in paper mills for the transformation of tissue paper, it is self-centering and has a wide range of expansion (up to 20 mm).

The leaf is an internal mechanism of the device, a little rod which moves from an inclined to an upright position and can safely lift the device. This type of mechanism brings the advantage of lengthening the life of the cores, since it does not consume their internal part.

Thanks to this peculiarity, the operators’ work is reduced to zero, when instead they would have to repair the cores manually; better safety for workers is achieved and consequently there is a production increasement.


Cores can be made of the following materials:






In some cases, they get treated so that they do not oxidize.

For example, if they are made of aluminum, they can be treated with anodizing (anodic oxidation), a process which makes the aluminum shinier and increases its hardness.

If they are made of steel, they undergo processes of zincing, bluing and nickel plating; this last one is an electrolytic treatment which gives and amazing aesthetic output and gives the cores an almost silvered aspect.
