Svecom P.E. has created a new business unit, SVECOM CARBON FIBER that combines the experience of over 50 years of production of expandable shafts with the advantages of carbon fiber: this results in a solution that maximizes mechanical performance and lightness.

The process includes a new production plant in which shafts of different sizes can be processed according to customer requirements.

The new production plant allows the construction of tubes of different sizes and mechanical characteristics for the construction of shafts and rollers according to customer requirements.

The tubes can be made using two technologies: Filament Winding and Roll-Wrapping.

Filament Winding is a process that involves the wrapping of resin-impregnated carbon fibers on a mandrel (mold) that defines the finished dimensions of the piece. The tension and the winding angle given to the fibers give the finished pipe the desired mechanical characteristics. The process is completed with the polymerization (hardening) of the resin in a temperature-controlled oven and the extraction of the winding spindle.

The properties of carbon fibers, such as high hardness, high tensile strength, low weight, high chemical resistance, high temperature tolerance and low thermal expansion make them very useful in the field of expanding shafts.

Advantages:

  • Wide possibilities of fiber orientation.
  • Highly automated and repeatable process
  • Possibility of making large tubes

In the Roll-Wrapping process, pre-impregnated carbon fiber sheets (prepreg) are wrapped on the spindle / mold, which must be stored at -18 ° C before being cut. The layering (or lamination) of different prepregs with an appropriate orientation gives the final piece the desired mechanical characteristics. Before the polymerization of the resin in the oven, the very high-voltage winding of special plastic strips ensures maximum compaction of the product.

To produce this type of processing, the carbon atoms are bound together in crystals aligned parallel along the axis of the fiber, which receives from this alignment a high strength-volume ratio making it more resistant for its dimensions.

Advantages:

  • Fiber / resin ratio of prepreg is precise and uniform
  • Possibility of arranging the fibers exactly at 0 degrees to obtain the maximum axial stiffness
  • Ease of using prepreg with different types of fibers for making the product
  • Better surface finish obtainable from grinding

CARBON FIBER EXPANDING SHAFTS WITH LUGS

The carbon fiber pneumatic shaft with lugs is recommended for material winding and unwinding on cores.

The carbon fiber shaft is available with a thin external steel sleeve for maximum protection and resistance, or in aluminum for an even lower weight. If maximum lightness and / or maximum rotation speeds are desired, the shaft can be made with the table entirely in carbon fiber.

The body of the shaft is made of high-strength carbon fiber manufactured using the filament winding technique.

The elastic module of the carbon fiber tube used is determined according to the application of the shaft, as well as the number and type of lugs.

The shaft has important characteristics:

  • The lug compartments are made of high-strength steel technology designed to avoid any possibility of surface cracking and to distribute the load evenly over the entire carbon section;
  • The central body in carbon fiber has a surface of carbon steel specially designed to safely transmit torque through the steel ends of the shaft;
  • For greater safety, the shaft is covered with an external steel sleeve;
  • The junction between the table and the steel journals, always made according to customer’s design, is designed to transmit the required torque safely.
  • The use of this shaft increases productivity compared to existing steel shafts because it has the advantage of being lighter: this makes it easily movable by a single operator and able to carry high weight reels with limited bends

The Svecom carbon fiber shaft is available with a diameter up to 400mm and a length up to 6000mm.

Dimensions and technical specifications can be designed to meet the exact requirements requested by customer.

PULTRUSION CARBON FIBER PNEUMATIC SHAFTS WITH LEDGES

We have developed and patented, with the help of our American subsidiary Goldenrod Corporation, an extremely rigid, light and handy shaft with multiple cavity design.

The pultrusion carbon fiber shaft with ledges combines the advantages of the multivalve ledge design with the high stiffness and low inertia of carbon fiber.

Hundreds of high modulus carbon fibers, impregnated with epoxy resin, are pulled into the cavities of an extruded aluminum profile. After the resin hardening, the fibers arranged at 0 degrees give a very high rigidity, which combined with the lightness of the aluminum profile allow to obtain a pneumatic shaft with ledges with superior acceleration and balancing capacity.

The “pultrusion” model can be used in all common applications, but it is particularly suitable in those applications where a greater stiffness than aluminum is required while maintaining reduced weight and inertia, or in those situations where it is not possible to use shafts in steel or in carbon with lugs.

  • Light, handy, safe and reliable
  • Carbon fiber parts are completely protected on all sides by an aluminum sleeve that protects it from cuts or damages
  • Rapid acceleration and high rotation speed

“Pultrusion” design is available in the following diameters: 3 “; 4”; 5 “; 6″; 6.75 ”

CARBON FIBER ROLLERS

Carbon fiber rollers with wide range of surface treatments.

We can supply non-expandable rollers with carbon fiber technology to produce rollers up to:

  • diameter of 400 mm
  • length of 6000 mm

Dimensions and technical specifications can be designed to meet the exact requirements requested by customer.

CARBON FIBER NON-EXPANDABLE CHUCKS

The carbon fiber non-expandable chuck is used for unwinding the reels (Paper or Tissue) on tangential belt unwinding machines.

The extremely light design of the chuck allows a better manual handling, thus avoiding the need to use lifting systems to insert it into the reel and extract it from it.

The journal’s steel cover allows the use of crane hooks.

In addition, the chuck comes without welds and rivets and with replaceable inserts.

The connection on the machine is always designed following customer’s specifications.
